  • 06/09/2017 11:00:00 to 06/09/2017 16:30:00
  • The Valdoe, Goodwood, Chichester PO18 0PJ just north of the airfield.

The meeting will start with a talk on early RFC/RAF air charts - this will be followed by two talks on aero sextants with a display of examples

The HANG Autumn meeting will be held on Wed 6 Sep 2017 11am to 4pm and will again be at The Valdoe, Goodwood, Chichester PO18 0PJ just north of the airfield. Friends of members and other interested people are welcome but please remember the need for prior booking.

HANG has now adopted a change in the timing of these meetings. Doors open at 1100 for coffee and the first talk will start at 1130. Lunch will be at 1230. The second talk will be at 1330 and the third talk at 1430. There will be time for questions after the talks. This will allow for tea and biscuits at 1530 with the chance of leaving around 1600 to avoid rush hour traffic.

The topic will be ‘Aero Charts and Sextants – the Tools of the Trade’.

Mike Nolan will speak on early RFC/RAF air charts and the development of WW2 Target Maps. Mike was a Defence Surveyor so his talk will cover an aero subject seen from a surveyor’s viewpoint.

Celestial navigation requires measurement of the angle between a heavenly body and the celestial horizon. For two and a half centuries seamen have accomplished this using the universally recognised marine sextant. David Pike will explain how, in the relatively few years the sextant was used by airmen, the aircraft sextant came to look so different from its maritime cousin.

Douglas Denny will expand upon Dave’s introduction by describing the aircraft sextants in his collection in greater detail and with special reference to the optics. In particular, he’ll be describing his experience restoring and using the Coutinho artificial horizon attachment for a marine sextant and the German Plath Gyro Sextant.

Prior booking is essential so that the catering can be planned accordingly. The booking should be made, before 4 Sep, with Keith Hope-Lang at hang@rin.org.uk. The charge will be £12 in cash at the door on the day or £15 by cheque due to our bank’s handling charges. The charge covers buffet lunch, wine, tea and chocolate biscuits served during the meeting.
Any queries should be addressed to Keith Hope-Lang at 01 243 811 388 or hang@rin.org.uk.
