Olympics airspace ends

All airspace restrictions for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been lifted.

The last restricted zone - known as P114, in place for the Paralympic Games - ended at midnight on 12/13 September.

Praising the role of the General Aviation community in keeping infringements to a bare minimum, the CAA’s Chief Executive commented 'Establishing such a large airspace security zone for that length of time was unprecedented, particularly as it covered some of the most congested airspace in the world. The fact that it was so successful is in no small part due to the role played by the GA associations and their members'.

A major publicity campaign on the restrictions had been led by the Airspace & Safety Initiative (ASI) over 18 months. This included a website, 80,000 leaflets (some in French and German), podcasts, an iBook guide and briefings at airfields.

The Institute's General Aviation Navigation Group (GANG) and ASI co-hosted an all-day seminar on 10 March for 400 pilots in the RGS - this was a most successful event and we are proud to have contributed to the safety of the games.
