UK port freight down
Total port traffic in the year ending 3rd quarter 2012 was down 2% on the year ending 3rd quarter 2011.
After the recession of 2008-09, traffic recovered through 2010-11 but, in Q3 2012, the decline in both tonnage and units that was seen in the first 2 quarters of the year has continued.
Total port tonnage in the year ending Q3 2012, at 497 million tonnes, was down 2% on Q3 2011's 509 million tonnes.
And the number of units of all types handled in the year ending Q3 2012, at 20,797,000, was down 3% on Q3 2011's 21,419,000 units.
Tonnage in Q3 2012 3-months itself (124 million tonnes) was down 3% on Q3 2011 and the number of units handled in Q3 2012 (5,976,000) was down 4% on the same 3-months of 2011.
‘Units’ include all roll-on roll-off units whether carrying freight or not (road goods vehicles, unaccompanied trailers, shipborne port-to-port trailers, passenger vehicles, trade vehicles, and other ro-ro units) and lift-on lift-off containers.
