S Korea to install eLoran

South Korea is to install eLoran as a counter to GNSS jamming from the North.

In a surprise additional paper presented at this week's European Navigation Conference (ENC) in Vienna, details of the Korean eLoran programme were presented for the first time ever.

Seo Jiwon of S Korea explained that the system is being procured as a complementary position, navigation and timing (PNT) service in South Korea - required due to the repeated GPS jamming from North Korea.

The South Korean Government has recently completed the 'Design, Development and Construction' documents for the Korean eLoran system, which will consist of 5 eLoran transmitters and 43 differential stations, providing better than 20m accuracy across the country.

Inital operations (IOC) is expected in 2016 with full availability (FOC) following in 2018.
