UK's air traffic glitch
A technical problem caused delays in air departures from UK on 9 July - but it was not as bad as reported . .
NATS' original statement explained 'NATS is experiencing technical problems at our Swanwick control centre and we are working to restore full operations. This has not resulted in the closure of UK airspace or the suspension of all flights in or out the UK.'
The explanation was made in light of sensational claims from elsewhere that the entire UK airspace had been shut down.
But, to maintain safety, NATS did restrict the number of aircraft flying across the south of England as well as airport departures.
By 1235 BST, NATS was able to state that it had identified and corrected the technical problem and that operations were returning to normal.
Outbound delays from the UK had generally been limited to 20 minutes.
No doubt a full explanation will be forthcoming.
