Solent Branch News - April 2014 - "The Real RIN"

In a recent President's Blog it was pleasing to note his reminder that most members encounter RIN through its branches and not major conferences.

To some extent it might also be fair to claim that the President's reminder applies not just to the membership but to the regions in which RIN has active branches. It is for this reason that the Solent Branch runs and takes part in events throughout the area and seeks to embrace in its programme navigational activities on land, at sea and in the air. We also encourage SIG's to use us as a route by which they can make themselves known. A particularly good example being "Pinky" Grocott's talk at a joint meeting we held last September with the local Hydrographic Society on board the historic vessel Shieldhall. His description of how animals navigate above and below the waves was fascinating.

As well as events we run ourselves, we receive a steady stream of invitations from "kindred" organisations to support their events. By the end of the current season there will have been in the order of eighteen local activities at some ten different locations, all at very low cost to RIN in financial terms and staff time. The picture shows the new RRS Discovery visited by 50 members in early January.

Maintaining and developing links with the next generation of navigators is important and it was pleasing to have the CO of HMS Blazer and eight of her midshipmen with us at the Royal Lymington YC to hear the Director describe his time navigating the Royal Yacht and HMS Ark Royal. Many Cadets from the Warsash Maritime Academy will be in the audience to at our forthcoming meeting to hear Past President, Colin Beatty, update us on the subject of GPS. It takes place on 1st May 2014 and will be followed by our AGM.

The local committee are preparing the programme for next season and it already lists twelve activities. Perhaps the title with the most intrigue is "GPS for the Master Criminal"! Visits are always popular and a visit to the new MCA control centre is included in our plans.

A key event will be the one day conference being run by the Small Craft SIG on the subject of "Weather and sailing". It will be on Sat 29th November 2014 at the Hornet Services Sailing Club", Gosport.

The programme has still to be finalised, suggestions are always welcomed.
