Solent Branch - Highly Commended - "AMAZING PEOPLE"

For its local work for RIN at twice yearly exhibitions for young people, the Branch has received a highly commended "amazing people" award.

The award was made by the Southampton Education and Business Partnership at a recent ceremony in Southampton. The award was collected on behalf of the RIN by Geoff Renshaw, long-standing Vice-Chairman of the Solent Branch.

The citation read as follows:-

"For many years a team of dedicated volunteer ambassadors from the RIN have been attending The Solent Skills Festival and The Big Bang Fair. They first attended our events when they were held at the Ageas Bowl, the home of the Hampshire Cricket Club, and are now regular attendees at ABP's City Cruise Terminal , our new venue for the festival and the BIG Bang Fair.

It is especially pleasing to know that these volunteer ambassadors give so much of their own time for the benefit of 1000's of young people who have attended these events over the years.

At each event they will resource equipment and have people providing some exciting and inspirational activities and tasks, demonstrating the use of digital equipment and GPS signalling to aid navigation and shipping around the world.

During our STEM activities the RIN stand is consistently busy with so many young people people interested to know how things work and to have a go with some of the navigational instruments.

These opportunities to experiment with technology are difficult to come by, therefore, thanks to the dedication of these people we can provide excited and keen young people with an opportunity to discover and explore different instrumentation.

It is always difficult to obtain the commitment of organisations to attend our STEM events due to resourcing, time and cost issues., so it is to know that you have some very dependent people who always go out of their way to support STEM events. And it is very pleasing we have people such as these who we can depend upon. "

Note by Branch Secy, our displays do cover land, marine and air, not just maritime. Have said that, when we have a ship's bridge simulator, it is always very popular. The next event is on 22nd Oct 2014.
