Solent Branch News - March 2015

The Branch has continued the busy start to the meetings and visits season with many events being a "sell out"

With a capacity attendance, our September meeting on board the historic vessel Shieldhall set the pattern which has continued, the topic for this event being the salvaging of the SS Costa Concordia. Our October meeting at the Warsash Maritime Academy attracted a turn out of 70 with an amazing age range of 20 through to 85! For this meeting the topic was the sometimes controversial relationship between the pilot and a ship's master.

Two of the RIN's Special Interest Groups have certainly identified this as a region in which to hold activities. The History of Air Navigation and the Small Craft SIGs held local events in November and both were "sold out" well in advance of their booking's closing dates. The SCG SIG's weather and sailing seminar, together with the Solent Branch's own programme attracted quite a number of people who visited RIN stand at the Southampton Boat Show to join the Institute.

The current reorganisation of UK Coastguard Service has been attracting quite an amount of publicity, due in part the closure of a number of the traditional coastguard stations. Our December visits to the new National Maritime Operations Centre at Kites Croft, Fareham were therefore particularly timely. ( The numbers wishing to attend meant that two visits were needed and a further visit will be arranged for early next year.)

As reported in the last issue of Navigation News the Solent Branch had received an award as "Amazing People" for its role in taking part in local STEM events for young in recent years. It was therefore with very regret and sadness that we learned of the death of Sarah Purchase. With her husband Graham, she had been a key player in the flying section of our exhibit. A skilled pilot in her own right, an "Amazing Person", she will be very much missed.

Looking to the future, variety of topics and locations remain the watchword. In January will be at NATs,, in February we visit Ordnance Survey, in March we go to the Royal Lymington Yacht Club and in April for a final meeting of the season we meet at the Warsash Maritime Academy for our AGM. See forth coming events in Navigation News and on the RIN website.

For those who fly or sail, do note Sat and Sunday,13th and 14th June as the weekend of the "Fly Sail" event. Organised by the Small Craft and General Air Navigation SIGS, it will be based in this region. The flying will take place at Lee-on- Solent and the sailing will be from Gosport.
