HANG North Thursday 6th October 2016
Our five speakers enjoy a joke during the question session (JGP)
Record numbers attended this year’s HANG North, the fifth since we began in 2012. For the third year running the venue was Newark Air Museum, reselected because the people there try so hard to satisfy our every wish. This year, the interior of the ‘Dambuster’s Hut’ was rearranged, so that we could fit in an extra row of seats to allow 40 people to attend. The format was the same as in previous years; arrive anytime after 10.00AM, free-time in the Museum until lunch under the Varsity, and talks in the afternoon.
Andy Brookes gave ‘A 25 minute potted history of the Canberra airframe’. Rob Glover, who incidentally met three Navigators he’d last flown with over 50 years ago, talked about ‘The early days and Suez’. Gil Stenson talked about ‘QRA in Germany’. Gordon Dyer talked about ‘The PR Role’, and Tim Allen jumped aircraft to the Harrier, Sea Harrier, and Pucara to keep us on the edge of our seats with a thrilling talk about the urgent testing and evaluation he’d been involved with during and immediately after the Falklands Campaign.
We had intended to change this to a biennial event, but after the enjoyment had by all and the fact that people are already making suggestions for next year’s topic, it looks like we’ll be booking Newark Air Museum again next year.
