eLoran testing in the US
After much debate but little action since 2004, the US is finally starting eLoran trials.
Under a Cooperative Research And Development Agreement (CRADA) with the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and US Coast Guard (USCG), UrsaNav and Harris Corporation have undertaken to research, evaluate and document eLoran technology as a candidate for providing position, navigation, and timing (PNT) information as a potential complementary system to GPS.
This has been discussed since 2004, but every attempt at formal legislation has failed - see Previous News below.
But now UrsaNav has declared eLoran transmitter on-air test periods from the Loran sites at Havre, MT, George, WA and Fallon, NV. They will be continuously broadcasting from 0900 local time on 20 June to 1200 on 30 June 2017.
The sites will be operating on a 5990 rate, but occasionally may operate at other rates. Only the site at Fallon will be operating as eLoran, with the sites at Havre and George operating as Loran-C. All will be synchronised to UTC.
