Flight demand is growing worldwide, and as this trend continues, increased attention is being given to developing innovative methods and technologies that promote safe and efficient operations.  Availability of airport resources, including runways, taxiways, and stands, can act as a limiting factor to operational efficiency, and as such, optimal allocation of resources can contribute to improving system performance.  From a human factors perspective, increasing flight demand also places additional cognitive demands upon tower controllers and others involved in managing daily operations.

In this talk, Dr Elizabeth Argyle, Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham, will discuss her research in airport operations and the development of a decision support tool for optimising aircraft routing during surface operations.  Supported by the Institute for Aerospace Technology, this multidisciplinary project drew on perspectives from computer science, operational research, human factors, and positioning and navigation research to develop a decision support tool to provide guidance to tower controllers on optimal routing of aircraft between stands and the runway holding area.  In addition to discussing the importance of optimisation-based methods for supporting airport operations, this talk will also review recent findings on human behaviour during vehicle routing problem solving and how such information can add value to the design process of decision support tools.
