In this age of electronic mail, it is difficult to imagine how difficult it was to link the corners of the British Empire. Mail, and its speedy delivery in all directions, was the main method of communication and aerial delivery seemed to be the best solution. Enter the Short C Class flying boat, designed to carry this mail along with passengers to the far corners of the globe. In overcoming the challenges of weather and navigation, the foundations of the astonishing air services we enjoy today were formed. The heat of the deserts and tropics, along with the inhospitable and cold North Atlantic were all areas to be overcome. The speaker will describe how Imperial Airways and its successor BOAC met and overcame these challenges with an aircraft ‘fit for purpose’. Technical reliability, innovative instruments and navigational techniques came together to produce a remarkable service across the globe. The age of the flying boat has long gone, but today it is remembered fondly by many and the contribution made by these elegant craft will endure for years to come.
