HANG Autumn Meeting ‘Naval Aviation from WW1 to the Cold War’
The HANG Autumn meeting will be held on Wed 17 Oct 2018 from 11am to 4pm and will again be at The Valdoe, Goodwood, Chichester PO18 0PJ which is just north of the airfield. Friends of members and other interested people are welcome but please remember the need for prior booking.
Doors will open at 1100 for coffee and the first talk will start at 1130. Lunch will be at 1230. The second talk will be at 1330 and tea and biscuits will be served at 1430. There will be time for questions after the talks with the chance of leaving sometime after 1500 to avoid rush hour traffic.
The topic will be ‘Naval Aviation from WW1 to the Cold War’ Dr Philip MacDougall will look at the RNAS experimental airfield established on the Isle of Grain by the Admiralty at Port Victoria.
He will talk of the various experimental and testing units which were created at this rapidly expanded airfield. He will also discuss how the Port Victoria airfield worked in conjunction with a second RNAS airfield that that had already been created on the Isle of Grain. For the second paper John Ford will give a post WW2 view of the Cold War in the North Atlantic.
That era was very real to all those serving in the military but the UK was in social and political turmoil with few having any conception what was going on in the Atlantic. The conflict is now slipping from the memory of those who did know something. The talk will include personal reminiscences of a Fleet Air Arm pilot, plus descriptions of potential operations during the Cold War as seen from a Fleet Air Arm perspective.
The charge will be £15 which is the first increase in several years. The cost covers a good quality buffet lunch, wine, coffee, tea
