Joint Meeting and Talk  - Graham Cumming

Circumnavigating the World – A Distilled History

Since the dawn of civilisation rudimentary seafaring craft would sail ‘beyond the horizon’. Driven by desires of conquest or adventure this led to longer passages and travel to distant lands. Because of dangerous coastlines, and unpredictable wind and currents, it took many years before a ship would make a circumnavigation of the globe. This talk describes the development of sailing vessels which allowed long distance trade routes, and especially circumnavigation, to flourish in the ‘age of sail’. The hazards and legacy of the sail-trading era are highlighted. The talk will include a number of seldom seen early photographic images.

The talk will be followed by an informal supper – buy your tickets at the bar before the talk.

1830 for 1900. Guests will be welcome.  A Pay & Display car park is adjacent to the club.
