This is the first time that the Small Craft Group has arranged a joint visit with the Scottish Branch for members and their guests. As well as being of interest to Scottish Branch members, it is hoped that other RIN members will also take the opportunity to participate in this historic visit.
Oban is around a three hour journey by car, coach or train from Glasgow or Edinburgh and less than 2 hours from Stirling. If travelling by train, the journey takes you along the world-famous West Highland Line. ScotRail runs trains six times a day from Glasgow Queen Street Station to Oban. If you are travelling by coach you can visit the Citylink website. Glasgow is the nearest large airport to Oban and is approximately 90 miles away. There are good links from the airport to the train and bus terminals in the city. Other options include the Caledonian Sleeper service from London Euston.
For those planning on arriving at the Depot in the morning by car, there is car parking available on site but spaces are limited, so car sharing is advisable.
This visit will include not only tours of the depot and buoy yard but also a couple of talks and, subject to service commitments, a tour of one of the Northern Lighthouse Board’s buoy tenders.
The outline programme for the day is detailed below:
1030 -1050 - Arrival, coffee
1050-1120 - Introduction to NLB, AtoN Review & DGPS presentation – Peter Douglas, NLB Navigation Manager
1120-1200 - Tours of depot, ESTF and buoy yard
1200-1230 - Presentation by Paul Jennings, Oban Harbour Manager
1230-1400 - Lunch (venue t.b.d – payable locally)
1400-1500 - PHAROS tour
There is no charge for this visit but registration is compulsory and places are limited to one guest per member, as the maximum capacity is 20. Once the maximum capacity has been reached a waiting list will come into operation.
Please note that due to the working nature of the Depot and Vessel, parts of the tours may not be readily accessible for those with walking difficulties.
Nearer the time of the visit a follow-up email will be sent to members confirming the arrangements for the day, including the venue for lunch.
