Ports, the Sea and Me...
(Pilotage in the 21st Century)

Join us at Solent University, Southampton for an exclusive evening Ivana-Maria Carionni-Burnett, an experienced maritime pilot who will share insights from her remarkable career on the water. Ivana will discuss the challenges of guiding vessels safely through complex environments, from shifting tides to the demands of modern shipping.

This is a unique opportunity to hear first-hand about the skills, decision-making, and dedication required in one of the maritime sector’s most critical professions. The session will conclude with a Q&A, giving you the chance to ask your questions directly.

Free to attend.

Introducing your Speaker

Ivana-Maria Carioni-Burnett, Master Pilot

Ivana-Maria started her sea-going career as a Midshipman in the Royal Navy. During her service, she became and IHO-qualified hydrographer and gained a BSc in Marine Sciences, deploying several times to the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and Mediterranean. After gaining the highly sought-after Command Qualification – the Navy’s equivalent to a Master Mariner’s ticket – and gaining her Career Commission, she chose to jump ship and take her navigation and ship-handling skills to the next level. Ivana has now been a pilot on the Thames, with the Port of London Authority, for over 6 years. When not on the roster, she advocates for women at sea and sits on the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee at the PLA. A Freeman of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, Ivana also chairs the Maritime Navigation Group, a special interest group of the Royal Institute of Navigation of which she is a Fellow.
