<title>US Navy to introduce updated GPS carrier landing system</title>

<description><![CDATA[<h3>On 22 May, US Naval Air Systems Command announced a $235 million contract with Raytheon Integrated Defence Systems for an updated Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS).</h3>

The low-rate initial production (LRIP) contract covers initial, small-quantity production to test JPALS thoroughly to gain confidence that it will meet requirements before moving on to mass production.<br />
<br />
JPALS uses local differential GPS to provide accurate, reliable and high-integrity landing guidance for carrier-based aircraft, providing an adverse weather precision approach and landing capability. Accuracy for touchdown on the moving carrier is claimed to be ~4 inches (~10 cm)<br />

<title>Loss of light aircraft north of the Chanel Islands</title>

<description><![CDATA[<h3>During the night of Monday 21 January, a US-registered Piper PA-46 Malibu aircraft was lost from radar north of Guernsey.</h3>

The aircraft was en route from Nantes, France, to Cardiff, UK, with one pilot and one passenger - Cardiff City Argentinian footballer, Emiliano Sala - on board.<br />
<br />
Although the loss may have taken place in the Brest Flight Information Region (FIR), the UK Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) has subsequently announced that they will investigate the loss of the aircraft. They add that, since the following day, they have been working closely with international authorities, including the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the French Bureau d’Enquêtes &amp; d’Analyses (BEA) and the Junta de Investigación de Accidentes de Aviación Civil (JIACC) in Argentina.<br />
<br />
Farnborough-based AAIB explain that they will be gathering all available evidence to conduct a thorough investigation; but, if the aircraft is not found, it is likely that the scope of the investigation will be limited.<br />
