WELCOME
RIN@75 VIRTUAL MUSEUM
Welcome to the first version of the Virtual Museum. This online portal is an ongoing part of the heritage project which was started during the RIN@75 celebrations to showcase the history of the RIN while highlighting the extraordinary navigation developments of the last 75 years.
The Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) was founded in 1947 and was very much an institution influenced by the moment. Inspired by its American counterpart, RIN was established by a group of individuals who sought to harness the great advances which had been made in navigation. This group presciently anticipated the incredible progress that was yet to be made in PNT (positioning, navigation and timing) innovation, with the Institute founded as a platform to encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary discussion and co-operation.
RIN has always been conscious of its heritage and the 75th anniversary in 2022 provided the opportunity to explore the archives, instruments and celebrate the great achievements of our members.
The virtual museum today is only a starting point. We hope that the RIN@75 heritage project will grow and expand with new contributions in the coming years. The website will be updated on an ongoing basis to reflect this so check back again soon!
This project would not have been possible without the work of the heritage committee and the support of the family of Walter Blanchard, past President of the RIN.
