The Course and Speed calculator Mk 11A (along with the Dalton Dead Reckoning computer LINK) were produced to solve the same problem – ‘the triangle of velocities’, which comprises the three vectors: ‘heading and airspeed’, ‘wind direction and speed’, and ‘track and groundspeed’. Usually, the required track direction is known (measured from chart) as well as the aircraft airspeed and the wind direction and speed. By adding a wind vector and knowing the required track and the aircraft airspeed, the required aircraft heading and the resultant groundspeed could be calculated. This was done for every leg of a multi-leg flight to produce the flight-plan. |
