We’re adopting ‘RYA SafeTrx’ as our new safety ID scheme

We are pleased to tell you that we have some exciting news about our voluntary safety identification scheme for boat owners. On 4 July, in partnership with the Royal Yachting Association, HM Coastguard will be introducing RYA SafeTrx as our new official scheme. RYA SafeTrx is a world-leading App and is available for free. It provides the user with all the benefits of CG66 along with some new functionality. Users can also register their details via the RYA SafeTrx website.

The RYA SafeTrx app is available to any UK resident who wants to be safer afloat and now has over 13,000 users. Maritime Search and Rescue agencies in Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Finland, Norway, Cyprus, South Africa and Australia have already adopted SafeTrx. The app is ideal for all recreational boat users, including dinghy cruisers, PWCs, RIBs, open power boats, canoeists, kayakers, wind and kite surfers.

You can find more information about RYA SafeTrx and downloading the app or registering your details at With RYA SafeTrx becoming our new official voluntary safety identification scheme, we will stop taking new registrations to CG66. We will be communicating to CG66 members about this. CG66 data will still be accessible to the Coastguard in the medium term, but we will no longer be accepting new entries.

From 4 July onwards, we will be promoting RYA SafeTrx and encouraging recreational boat users to get the app or register online. We’d really appreciate your support with this, so if you are willing to amplify our content on social media, support our message at events or promote the app in other ways, we’d be grateful.

Yours sincerely

HM Coastguard
