Early Career Network

Early Career Network

The Early Career Network (ECN) was set up in 2019 as the Younger Members' Group as part of the RIN’s strategy to be a diverse and inclusive institute.

The ECN welcomes any early career professional, researcher, student, or young person with an interest in navigation. We exist to enable young people to contribute to and engage with the RIN.

If you are interested in the ECN, please sign up to our mailing list at the bottom of this page to receive email newsletters, event updates, and discover ways to engage, contribute and progress with the RIN.

Sign up to our mailing list at the bottom of this page.

Next event: Next Gen Nav 2025 will take place on 23 October in NPL, Teddington. Applications to present will remain open until late-September.

Access the Prof David Last fund to attend a major navigation conference (awarded via Next Gen Nav).
Join the ECN LinkedIn Group.
Watch Webinars tailored to students and early career professionals.
Be part of the ECN mailing list to hear about upcmoing events.
Access the RIN's route to Professional Registration.
Connect with professionals from the world of navigation at RIN events.

Membership

You don't have to be a member of the RIN to join the ECN - you can sign up to our mailing list at the bottom of this page. If you would like to join the RIN please visit our Membership Value page here.

Did you know that if your University joins the RIN you would be eligible for a free student membership? Ask your University to contact Mick Watt at membership@rin.org.uk to get started!

If you're interested in getting involved with the ECN's activities and would like to join the committee please reach out to Clare Stead at comms@rin.org.uk.

Events

The ECN looks to create events and activities specifically focused on the needs of its members. We encourage all members to contribute your own event ideas and the ECN will support you in making them happen. Sign up to our mailing list at the bottom of this page to get monthly updates on events and discover ways to get involved and contact us.

As our ECN is a diverse group of young people interested in different aspects of navigation, we encourage members to explore the RIN’s shared calendar. This features events from across the RIN’s interest groups. Please feel free to register for any of these events, many of which are online and free to attend.

Next Gen Nav

Next Gen Nav is the Early Career Network's flagship event, first held in 2021. This event is a mini-conference, designed to share ideas and build networks. Next Gen Nav is aimed at young researchers and early career innovators in positioning, navigation, timing and related systems and applications. The audience is friendly, providing a comfortable place to practice your presentation skills, and the best presentation on the day is awarded a scholarship from the Prof David Last Tribute Fund to attend a major navigation conference. The 2022 event in Nottingham and the 2023 event in Cranfield were both a great success and we look forward to hosting the event again this year.

Next event: Next Gen Nav 2025 will take place on 23 October in NPL, Teddington. Applications to present will remain open until late-September.

Navigate Your Future: Career Insights From RIN Experts

"Navigate Your Future: Career insights from RIN experts" took place on 21st June. The series features presentations from experts in the RIN community, who explain their career trajectories and share insights they have gained through their own experiences. Each presentation is also followed by a Q&A opportunity. Episode 1 hosted three speakers:

  • Ramsey Faragher, President, FRIN, CTO, Executive Director and Founder at FocalPoint. Bye-Fellow of Queens' College, University of Cambridge
  • Ivana-Maria Carrioni-Burnett, AFRIN, Ambitious Marine Pilot at the Port of London Authority / Strong advocate of Women in Maritime and Human Rights at Sea
  • Ed Parsons, FRIN, Geospatial Technologist at Google

Michelle Brown, Co-Chairperson, RIN

Interest in Navigation: I first became involved with RIN back in 2014 after winning their Youth Top Nav competition. Since then, I have become a permanent writer in their Navigation News magazine, part of the Membership & Fellows committee, the heritage committee and set up the YMG alongside HQ.

Peter ‘Pedro’ Thompson MRICS, Co-Chairperson, University College London (UCL)

I'm a PhD student at University College London (UCL) with a keen interest in navigation. My research primarily revolves around developing Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solutions for pedestrians navigating indoor environments. I focus on the use of Inertial and Magnetometer Measurement Units (IMMUs) and pay special attention to factors including environment type and sensor placement on the human platform affect magnetometers.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have previously podiumed the national mountain biking orienteering championships and I am an active member of Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW). For MREW I represent the Lake District in the MREW Ordnance Survey (OS) working group. This unique combination of roles has given me valuable insights into both academic researchers and end users' perspectives when it comes to navigation solutions.

Alex Schofield, Committee Member, University of Warwick

I am currently a PhD student at the University of Warwick, exploring various aspects of Assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems. My research, in collaboration with Spirent Communications, is dedicated to enhancing PNT reliability in challenging environments.

Previously, I began my career in the Royal Air Force, developing a keen interest in navigation while working on avionics for aircraft such as the C130 and F35. Following my service, I advanced my studies in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham, where I also engaged in research at the Nottingham Geospatial Institute.

Jasmine Zidan, Committee Member, University of Warwick

I’m a Research Fellow in the Connectivity and Communications Technology group at WMG, University of Warwick, where I work on PNT technologies for manufacturing. My background is in telecommunications and electronics. I completed my PhD in Engineering at Warwick, focusing on enhancing the robustness GNSS for autonomous vehicles. Before that, I worked in the port industry, overseeing information systems where PNT played a key role in vessel and container tracking, as well as in supporting port automation. When I’m not working on my research, you’ll probably find me hiking or travelling , usually getting lost somewhere scenic, which might explain my fascination with PNT!

Sam Christelow, Committee Member, University of Nottingham

I am a PhD student at the Nottingham Geospatial Institute at the University of Nottingham. My research focus is on developing high resolution algorithms for GNSS reflectometry using data fusion and machine learning techniques. Outside of academia I have interned at Surrey Satellite Technology and play guitar in a rock band.

George Newton, Committee Member, Viasat

I am a Senior Systems Engineer and a part-time PhD student specialising in satellite-based navigation concepts for both Earth and the Moon. I led the testbed development for the UK Space-based Augmentation System (SBAS) programme as well as conducting studies on multiple sovereign PNT systems. My PhD is on Lunar Navigation focussing on navigation techniques on the moon, navigation services for the moon, Lunar orbital dynamics, reference frame transformations for the moon and Lunar time standards. With a background in space systems engineering, I also serve as an officer in the British Army Reserves, bridging the gap between industry, academia, and the military.
