Volunteers

Volunteering with the RIN

The RIN’s work is delivered by a small team of employees and a very large group of volunteers. All know their contribution is valued as well as being fulfilling and rewarding.

Some volunteers help shape the output of our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) overseen by our passionate SIG Champions:

Other volunteers might give a talk, recommend speakers for a conference or help organise a meeting or seminar. Some serve on our Standing Committees (such as Membership and Fellowship and Audit and Risk) or are elected as Trustees on our governing body, Council. Our committees and Council meet three times a year.

Many of our volunteers have expertise in technical or practical aspects of Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT). However, we are keen to find other volunteers too:

  • project managers
  • accountants
  • investment managers
  • civil servants
  • business managers
  • lawyers
  • fundraisers
  • mentors
  • journalists

Volunteering with the RIN

The RIN is both a Learned Society (which delivers technical content) and a non-profit making organisation that must run its business efficiently and effectively.

We recognise it can be daunting to make contact with any organisation as a potential volunteer.

We’d like to reassure you that our head office team will be delighted to have an informal chat with you and then match you to someone with a good understanding of your wishes and your skills and expertise. We are also aware that new volunteers may prefer to prefer to commit to a time-limited project, rather than join a committee. We are happy to pay reasonable travel expenses on request.

The RIN is a friendly, dynamic and effective organisation and we would like to reassure you that we value and appreciate all our staff and volunteers. Regardless of whether you are a post-graduate student helping shape the future of PNT technologies; a professor or engineer; retired accountant; keen sailor or pilot, or full-time business manager, we can find a task you will enjoy and find fulfilling.

Please contact Hannah Sherrard if you'd like to learn more. We look forward to hearing from you and welcome your enquiry.
