Small Craft Group

The Small Craft Group (SCG) provides information and shares best practices on electronic navigation systems and aids to navigation. Group members share a common desire to navigate efficiently and safely on-board small craft. The group
organises regular talks on areas of interest. It has representation on committees of the MCA, Trinity House, Irish Lights and the Northern Lighthouse Board and is recognised by the European Harbour Masters Association and maintains
close links with the DfT, RYA and Cruising Association.
In recent years the SCG has been heavily involved in:
- Organising the biennial series of Electronic Navigation Conferences
- Delivering the biennial the Weather and Sailing Seminars with the Royal Meteorological Society
- The publication of the Electronic Navigation Systems - Guidance for Safe Use on Leisure Vessels Booklet and it's subsequent revisions (see here)
- The Pleasure Vessels Navigation Systems Working Group (PVNSSWG)
Note: UKSON requested in 2024 that the PVNSWG continue its' work and convert this report into a set of standards (for electronic charts and display systems for “leisure vessels”)and to provide a Gap Analysis between the data small craft
need and what is shown on official ENCs, as used on large ships with ECDIS equipment. This work is nearing completion and a copy of the final document will be available to download here, in due course.
