A report has just been released on the grounding of container ship Leda Maersk in Otago Lower Harbour on 10 June 2018. The ship proceeded up the Lower Harbour channel in the dark, and as it rounded the final bend a number of factors caused it to deviate from the planned track in the centre of the channel and ground on the left channel bank.

Although some of the latest Navigation technology, including ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) and a PPU (Portable Pilot Unit) were initially in use on the vessel, the report highlights how difficult it is in navigational terms to conduct the passage of such a large vessel, with limited visibility from the Navigation Bridge, up such a comparatively narrow channel.
