MIN 665 - Cessation of DGPS

09 August 2021   (1 Comments)

The formal notification from Maritime & Coastguard Agency about DGPS being switched off around the UK next March. A consultation confirmed it's no longer needed as RAIM and SBAS are now widespread.

The important call-to-action for mariners is: "Mariners should check their GNSS receiver(s) to confirm the presence of RAIM and consider upgrading to type-approved SBAS receiving equipment when available."

This is excellent advice and we encourage everyone on the water to actively do so.

In terms of accuracy for seagoing trading vessels I have always considered that this was undesirable. What reputable use can there be in allowing a vessel to clear the geology by 1-2 metres instead of 3-5 metres? However the deckside experts demanded it and so we fitted it. I would have to brush-up on the efficacy WRT to integrity checking. I had assumed the DGPS integrity alarm required by the IMO Performance Standard was one restricted to the integrity of the Differential correction transmissions.
