Space Debris: Fact and Future with Prof Marek Ziebart & Modern-Day Exploration of the Extremes with Jim McNeill

Evening Programme: New Frontiers & Sustainability
Our evening talks will address the sustainability of uninhabited and inaccessible places, and how this affects us all.

Talk 1: Space Debris: Fact and Future
Mega Constellations of satellites in Low Earth Orbit can help address key UN Sustainable Development Goal challenges such as food security, climate change and global connectivity.

At the same time, debris -- both known, tracked objects and smaller unknown debris-- are increasing. The closing speeds at Low Earth Orbit can be 15 kilometres a second. Each collision has the real potential to generate more uncontrolled debris.

New innovations are focusing on active debris removal; but can they keep up?

This talk, by Prof Marek Ziebart, FRIN, will review where we are now, what is being done about it, what the future looks like and are we ready?

Talk 2: Modern-Day Exploration of the Extremes - Crucial Work at a Critical Time
Jim McNeill has been at the cold face of climate change for almost 40 years. His work is focused on gauging exactly what is happening to the five extreme environments of Earth which, for over 70 years now, have been accepted as the barometers of change for the rest of the globe.

By capturing empirical data in seldom, if at all, sampled areas in near real-time, he seeks to empower decision-makers in politics, commerce and society to make better informed decisions about our immediate actions and future intentions with respect to the climate crisis. All of his work supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
