BeiDou satellite launch

China launched a BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) satellite at 1809 UTC on 24 June.



The 21st BeiDou-3 satellite was reported to have successfully been placed as the second in inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO) at a height of 22,237 miles (35,787 km) inclined at ~28.5 deg to the equatorial plane.

The ultimate system will comprise 27 satellites in medium Earth orbit (MEO), 5 geostationary (GEO) and 3 in IGSO.  Currently providing regional cover at ~10m accuracy, global Full Operational Capability (FOC), with improved accuracy, is scheduled for 2020.
