The annual Orionid meteors should peak in the night sky from 20 to 22 October.
If the sky is clear, the meteors should be best seen after midnight, when the Moon has set. There could be up to 20 per hour. They appear to originate from the club of the constellation Orion - hence the name - but radiate in all directions.
The meteors stem from Comet Halley, being debris - left behind by the comet - burning up in the Earth’s atmosphere. They vaporise at ~60 miles (~100 km) above Earth’s surface, travelling at ~41 miles (~66 km) per second.
