FocalPoint receives £6 million to improve GNSS accuracy

The Cambridge-based company has received funding from venture capital company Draper Esprit to accelerate introduction of its highly accurate positioning technologies for any GNSS device.

The company, led by CEO Dr Ramsey Faragher FRIN, explains that areas that will see improvements include: fitness and sports watch performance; indoor navigation and wayfinding; safety for the aviation and maritime industry; and asset tracking and site safety.

The company has built two flagship technologies: 'Supercorrelation', which is a chipset-level software product; and 'D-Tail', an application- or firmware-level software product.

The technology basically measures the direction-of-arrival of incoming GNSS signals, fitting into existing architecture as a software upgrade and requiring no extra hardware or infrastructure.  By doing this, it can exclude reflected signals or intentional deception.  It claims to provide 10x more accuracy in urban canyons and 10x higher integrity, with indoor sensitivity boosted 3-to-10-fold.

In August 2020, the company signed a deal with u‑blox to integrate Supercorrelation technology into its commercial chips. And FocalPoint are currently running trials with a number of other major chipset designers and consumer technology OEMs.

FocalPoint CEO comments on the on the new funding:  'This is an important moment for our team. Signing our first deal to integrate Supercorrelation into a commercial chip has increased the demand for our products from a multitude of different industries and use cases. This funding will help us to meet that demand and enable Supercorrelation and D-Tail to improve the lives and businesses of people across the globe.'
