HRH The Duke of Edinburgh arriving for RIN 2017 AGM

Our Patron since 1953.

Much loved and admired by all at the Royal Institute of Navigation.

You had an abiding interest in everything to do with navigation, particularly aligning new innovations with traditional skills.

Thank you, Sir.

Our condolences to the the Queen and the Royal Family.

Of the many times that I met our Patron, one stands out in particular . . We saw his wonderful sense-of-humour at our 50th Anniversary Dinner in 1997, held at Plaisterers Hall in the City. The Hall is below street level and entered by a long wide stairway. The venue had provided a red carpet for the Duke, but 'ordinary' folk were not permitted to walk on it, so it was left rolled up at the top of the steps until 5 minutes before his arrival. But he arrived earlier and I had to rush up to meet him. On descending, we had to wait at each step for the carpet to be unfurled. “Let’s step over the roll” he suggested, and we managed to get ahead of the carpet, which was unfurled behind us. By the time we got to the Reception, we were both giggling; it was apparently the first time that the Duke had outpaced a red carpet, and he laughed about it all evening. We were truly blessed with a Patron who was wonderful in so many ways; he will be greatly missed.

The Royal Institute of Navigation was a privileged beneficiary of the Duke's patronage, which lasted throughout most of the RIN's existence. He regularly attended our AGMs where he presented the awards, and afterwards mingled with members whom he always enjoyed meeting. His deep interest not only in navigation specifically but also more generally in science and technology, coupled with his charm, sense of humour, and relaxed nature meant he was a much-admired and well-respected Patron.

I have been saddened to learn that HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Patron of The Royal Institute of Navigation, passed away today. Being privileged to meet you twice, once in London and once in Manchester, I will remember fondly your charm, intelligence and wit, your keen interest in navigation, science and novel technologies, and your unconditional disrespect for futility, shallowness, foolishness, and incompetence. May you rest in peace, Sir. My sincerest condolences to the Royal Family. Dr Renato Filjar, FRIN, Croatia
