Contract for a renewed EGNOS

27 June 2022   (0 Comments)

Thales Alenia Space has signed a new contract with the EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) to deploy a new version of the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS).

Since 2011, EGNOS has supported all modes of transport with a GPS overlay, and this Safety of Life service has in particular made the aviation sector safer and more efficient; European operators have made airports more accessible without having to install landing aids. Sadly, since leaving the EU, UK has been legally excluded from the EGNOS service.

Thales Alenia Space will provide EUSPA with the new version of EGNOS (V243), provided by new Navigation Land Earth Station (NLES) technology in NLES-G3. This will be integrated with a new geostationary satellite 'GEO3', which will further enhance EGNOS performance. The improved system is scheduled to become operational in 2024.
