The UK Hydrographic Office is to start ending production of paper Navigational Charts, with the process ending in 2026.
The RIN is engaged with UKHO, MCA, RYA, Imray, manufacturers and other stakeholders, particularly in the following two areas:
Re recognition for "sub-ECDIS" ENC's: the Royal Institute of Navigation is leading a working group to address how electronic charts/systems can be recognised for use on pleasure vessels. The group is called Pleasure Vessels Navigation Systems Working Group (PVNSWG) and reports to the UK Safety of Navigation (UKSoN) Committee, part of Maritime and Coastguard Agency's remit. Pleasure vessel ENC recognition is a key part of the mix here. Quite a lot of detail is being worked through. The UK Hydrographic Office is very much engaged.
Re paper chart availability: our understanding is that paper charts will still be available, using UKHO data (details under review/discussion), but not printed by/purchased from UKHO after end 2026.
